Five unignorably authentic reasons to watch Mani Ratnam’s ‘Ponniyin Selvan’

Mani Ratnam’s magnum opus has arrived in theaters today amidst thunderous response from audiences all over the globe and critics are raving.  Here we take a look at        reasons to watch this well crafted epic multistarrer.

Firstly it has been a five decades dream to convert Tamil’s most famous and most read novel series into a film.  MGR and Kamal Haasan have tried to do it and had to give up due to the magnitude of condensing the five part series into a three hours movie.  It is befitting that Mani Ratnam succeeded in his third attempt.

Secondly a historical that shows the glory of ancient Tamils and their kings has not hit the screens in recent memory.  Our fathers and grandfathers were lucky to watch historicals very often but here is the chance for the young generation to experience a slice of what was drenched in some fantasy of course.

Thirdly a question may arise if ‘PS-1’ will be like a history class which most youngsters may shy away from.  Mani Ratnam has stayed true to the novel but at the same time has ensured that there is a perfect mix of action, romance, love, betrayal and most importantly the relationship dynamics between the numerous important characters in the film.

Those who have longed to watch compelling acting performances, ‘Ponniyin Selvan’ is their boon.  Chiyaan Vikram roars like a lion as the hot headed Aditha Karikalan who is a fierce warrior, pining lover, loyal prince all at the same time.  The one lengthy shot that he explains about his inner and outer struggles to Vikram Prabhu is in itself worth your ticket price.  Karthi as the swashbuckling hero Vandhiyathevan, Jayam Ravi as the ‘Ponniyin Selvan’, Trisha as the level headed princess and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as the schemestress out to destroy the cholas by means of seduction will keep you spellbound for most parts.  There is also a host of A-list supporting cast such as Jayaram, Prabhu, Sarathkumar, Parthiban, Aishwarya Lekshmi and Vikram Prabhu.

The mastercraftsman Mani Ratnam takes a little time to transport the audiences not only into the world of the Cholas but also into their drama.  After that he leads them to a culminating point in the climax which suggests that two much loved heroes are dead, a bloody war is about to break out and Nandhini the mastermind who so far was talking with her eyes picks up a mighty sword.  Now thats what you call a true blue cliffhanger to make you long for ‘Ponniyin Selvan 2’.
