After inspecting the on-going archaeological excavation work yesterday at Keezhadi in Sivagangai District, State Tamil Culture Minister Ma Foi Pandiarajan told newsmen that the Govt. was considering following the ‘European model’ of setting up quality, eye-catching Museums in the State in cooperation with private parties.
“Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), which is indulged in excavation work at the site, isn’t an enemy of the State,” he asserted and added that more than 1,000 from the State are employed in various branches of the Central organization which is offering necessary assistance to the State in maintaining 91 places of historical significance.
He added that Tamil Nadu had more UNESCO heritage sites than any other State in the country. He also informed that a ‘Swastik’ shaped well of ancient times had been found during excavation at Manachanallur. “In order to attract more tourists, the Govt. is also considering arranging a tour of heritage sites in the State,” he said.
Financial assistance has been sought from the Centre to modernize the existing museum at Egmore in Chennai, he informed the press. “As always, there has been a steady rise in the number of foreign tourists visiting the State,” he concluded.
