The Arizona police have arrested a 36-year-old male nurse after it was determined that he was responsible for raping and impregnating a woman admitted in the hospital, who gave birth while in a vegetative state.
Nathan Sutherland was arrested on Tuesday after investigators obtained his DNA sample and found that his DNA matched with that of the baby’s. He was arrested after being charged with one count of vulnerable adult abuse and one count of sexual assault. According to the authorities, Sutherland had been a licensed practical nurse at the Hacienda Healthcare in Phoenix, where the woman was admitted, since 2011. He was reportedly responsible for taking care of the woman at the time of the alleged abuse that led to the pregnancy.
Following Sutherland’s arrest, the officials at the healthcare facility stated, “Every member of the Hacienda organization is troubled beyond words to think that a licensed practical nurse could be capable of seriously harming a patient. Once again, we offer an apology and send our deepest sympathies to the client and her family, to the community and to our agency partners at every level.”
The police officials have handed over the baby boy to the victim’s family, who have claimed to take good care of him. The trial of the accused is yet to begin.
