In 2021, the Venkatesh-starrer ‘Narappa’ was released on OTT. It was a remake of the Tamil-language movie ‘Asuran’.
This week’s Hollywood release ‘Avatar 2’ has been found to bear a few similarities with the plot of ‘Narappa’. Like in the Indian film, in ‘Avatar 2’, too, a father, his wife and their two sons face danger from the villains. In the American sci-fi epic movie, the family migrates from the forest to the sea the same way as the protagonist’s family does so in ‘Narappa’. Migration is a common factor and what is also common between the two films is the existential crisis driving the fleeing
Then there is the element of the father’s dynamics with his elder and younger sons. If you think of it, the sentimentality evident in this is rooted and existential. ‘Avatar 2’, in many ways, feels like a family drama because Jake Sully’s character is concerned for the safety of his daring son, much like in ‘Narappa’.
In a recent interview, director James Cameron suggested that family members in the MCU and DC Extended Universe movies don’t behave like there is a supreme crisis in their lives. The characters in ‘Avatar 2’ are more well-rounded and believable in that respect.
