Imagine a film “abusing” a former Prime Minister. It would have been a major controversy. But for now, it’s a Netflix original series that has done it.
The series in question is ‘Sacred Games’, directed by Vikramaditya Motwane and Anurag Kashyap. It’s based on a book written by Vikram Chandra. Starring Saif Ali Khan as a cop, it also features Nawazuddin Siddiqui as a ganglord. Radhika Apte is a RAW agent.
The series has earned the anger of some Congress party members. They have taken a strong objection to Siddiqui’s character referring to Rajiv Gandhi as a pussy (‘fattu’). The subtitle has now been changed to read ‘wimp’ so as to avoid any controversy. Some members of the Congress want action against the series because it “abuses’ the former PM. A police complaint has been lodged in Kolkata.
This is what seems to have irked the Congress, their own record on freedom of expression notwithstanding!
