Mumbai to become world’s biggest Covid-19 hotspot?

Mumbai, the financial nerve centre of India, is all set to become the world’s biggest Covid-19 hotspot, say analysts.  The financial capital of India already has got more than 30,000 infections.

“The city is now second only to Moscow when it comes to new Covid-19 cases being added each day. Moscow is slowing down, Mumbai not. At the current rate of growth, Mumbai will soon become the world’s biggest Covid hotspot,” says India Today’s Rahul Kanwal, sharing data.

Even as positive cases keep piling up, the city, reports say, is facing a scarcity of hospital beds.  “There is a lack of adequate ambulances in Mumbai even as there is a growing number of hotspots in slums.  Medical staff numbers are low,” a social media influencer says.

Even as the city gradually opens up, the administration is clueless.  Commenting on the situation, columnist Minhaz Merchant said, “Total mess at Mumbai airport. The clueless Maharashtra government must restart cabs and local bus/train transport or passengers will be stranded. The government messed up migrant workers’ return, now it seems determined to put middle-class passengers through trauma as well.”
