Mother’s milk was transported for 1000-km via plane to feed baby

Imagine a mother’s milk being transported for 1,000 km for weeks on end in order to save an infant’s life.  Such a thing has happened in India.

It was on June 16 that Dorjey Palmo (30) gave birth to a baby in Leh, Ladakh.  The baby was born with a birth defect because of which the windpipe and the food channel were connected.  Since the infant was unable to consume the mother’s milk, doctors in Leh suggested “immediate surgery”.

The surgery was performed at Delhi’s Max Super Specialty Hospital.  However, the mother couldn’t travel to Delhi.  The family had to arrange for the transport of her breast milk from Leh to Delhi through air transport.

Thanks to the cooperation of the airlines, the transport could be done every day for three weeks.  A Times Of India report says that the breastfeeds used to come in a specific container made of thermocol and rexine.

Days after the surgery, the 35-day-old infant is doing well.
