Man beaten to death for coughing amid coronavirus scare

A 34-year-old man in Maharashtra's Thane district was brutally thrashed after he was found coughing by locals. As a result of the attack, he fell into a gutter and died.

The incident happened on Wednesday morning in the Kalyan town of Thane as the 34-year-old stepped out of his house to purchase a few essentials from a local store. On his way to the shop, he was found coughing by a few passersby who suspected him of being a Covid-19 patient and allegedly brutally assaulted him, causing him to fall into a gutter and die. A case of accidental death has reportedly been registered for now while the victim's body has been sent for a post-mortem. Updates regarding the issue are awaited.

As on April 23, a total of 23421 cases have been registered across India and 737 people have died. Tamil Nadu has reported 1683 cases and 20 deaths.
