The High Court of Madras has directed the Govt. of Tamil Nadu to file with it a detailed investigation report on the recent demise of 2 Kodungaiyur girls (sisters) who died on the spot when they came into contact with a live-wire which had been dangling from an open electric transformer in Kodungaiyur off Chennai.

Monsoon rains have been lashing the State in general and the coastal Districts on the north and Chennai in particular.  Heavy rains on Monday resulted in dislocation of a few electric cables which weren’t relocated immediately, resulting in the unfortunate and tragic demise of two sisters who had been passing through the street.

Locals accuse the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board’s (TNEB) local office of not reacting to several complaints made in the past about dangerous and open transformers and electric boxes in the localities.  Reacting to the demise, the Govt. placed on suspension 8 officials for not discharging their duties in a responsible manner.  Advocate George Williams filed a petition on this issue with the High Court of Madras.

Taking up his petition, the Court directed the Govt. of Tamil Nadu to file with it a detailed report on the unfortunate incident.  It also sought details of compensation packages to be given to the family of the girls.  The Court further directed the State to furnish details of action proposed to be taken to avoid recurrence of such events in future.
