Suriya’s 2D Entertainment signed a deal with Amazon Prime Video to directly release their upcoming film ‘Ponmagal Vandhaal’ starring Jyothika and K. Bhagyaraj in the lead roles. The decision has raised controversy in Kollywood as the Theater Owners Association threatened to boycott all Suriya films and films produced by his family. However, a thirty member team of the Producers Council including Bharathirajaa, T.G. Thyagarajan, K. Muralidharan, T. Siva, K.S. Srinivasan, and K. Rajan have extended support for the OTT only release citing that it could save small producers and also help in reducing the backlog of films awaiting theatrical release.
Our Kollywood sources have hinted that there are many other films now in various stages of negotiations with OTT leaders Amazon, Netflix, Disney and Hotstar and Zee 5 aiming for direct online releases. The films reportedly in line are Siddharth’s ‘Takkar’, Trisha’s ‘Paramapadha Vilayattu’, Santhanam’s ‘Server Sundaram’, Yogi Babu’s ‘Cocktail’ and at least half a dozen others.
Some reports say that even the Bollywood biggie ‘Laaxmi Bomb’ directed by Raghava Lawrence and starring Akshay Kumar and Amitabh Bachchan in the lead roles could also be first unveiled on OTT. Well the coronavirus has sure become a huge game-changer in the movie business to start with.
