Kerala floods and the continuing crisis- updates

The entire nation watches Kerala as the state tries to help itself out of the flood crisis. Relief measures are being done on a war footing with other states and politicians coming forward to help the affected people. Even stars from the film fraternity have given their contribution and are eagerly motivating others to help the best that they could.

It has been nine days since the rains began and about 164 people have lost their lives with about 2.25 lakh people in relief camps. The situation is also very alarming in regions of Pathanamthitta, Ernakulam, Alapuzha- they have been identified as the worst affected regiond due to the flood.

The latest update is that there might be a slight decrease in the floods today as they flow to Idukki and Idamalayar has lessened. The water level at Idukki is 2402.25 feet. The Kochi airport has been submerged by water and is set to be shut down until August 17th.

 
Another update is that Periyar and Chalkudy rivers are flowing at the same level but have not recided as of yet. All roads from Karnataka and Tamil Nadu to the state has been opened with the exception of Periya Ghat and Boys Town Ghat of Kannur. Works are currently going on to make them open as well.

It is also worth mentioning here that the state’s Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has sought the Prime Minister’s help in increasing the number of central forces engaged to make the rescue missions much more smoother.  16 teams of Army, 13 teams of Navy, 10 teams of Air Force and 39 teams of NDRF are currently engaged in rescue operations.

The NDRF personnel have alone rescued about 4000 people while the Navy has rescued 550.
