Today is the birthday of Kalaipuli S Thanu one of the leading lights of Kollywood for several decades.  Having started his career as a small time distributor, through sheer hardwork he grew in stature buying bigger films.  Rajinikanth was first flashed as Superstar Rajinikanth by Thanu is the posters of 'Bhairavi' which he distributed.  There was no looking back as Thanu then ventured in to production and turned in such celebrated films like 'Cooliekaran', 'Vanna Vanna Pookal', 'Kizhakku Cheemaiyile', 'Kandu Kondein Kandu Kondein', 'Aalavandhaan' , 'Kaaka Kaaka', 'Thuppakki', 'Theri' and 'Kabali' among others.

Kalaipuli is unparalleled for his business acumen and marketing strategy.  It is a huge doubt whether 'Kabali' would have become such a monster hit worldwide if not for its producer's over the top advertising going as far as painting aircrafts with the poster design.  Apart from backing commercial entertainers he also has an eye for progressive cinema and has bagged the National Award for Best Film ('Vanna Vanna Pookal'.
