Bollywood is abuzz with reports that Janhvi Kapoor might soon step into one of her late mother Sridevi’s most iconic roles. The much-anticipated sequel to the 1989 cult classic Chaalbaaz is back in discussion, and Janhvi is emerging as the frontrunner to headline the project.
For the actress, the opportunity is more than just another film — it’s an emotional journey. Sources reveal that while Janhvi is keen on taking up the role, she is treading cautiously, aware of the inevitable comparisons with her legendary mother. “She is taking the opinions of people around her before making a decision. She is excited but also wary. A final call is expected by the end of September,” a source shared.
The original Chaalbaaz, directed by Pankaj Parashar, featured Sridevi in a double role as the timid Anju and the feisty Manju, alongside Sunny Deol and Rajinikanth. The film went on to become a massive hit, celebrated to this day for Sridevi’s brilliant comic timing and effortless dual performance.
Interestingly, this isn’t the first time the sequel has been in the news. A few years ago, Shraddha Kapoor was even finalised for the project and, in 2020, admitted feeling nervous yet honoured at the thought of stepping into Sridevi’s shoes. However, with the film losing steam, it was eventually shelved.
Now, with producers once again eager to revive the franchise, Janhvi is seen as the most natural choice to carry forward the legacy. “Sridevi was the ultimate pan-Indian superstar, impossible to emulate. But for now, her daughter seems the right choice to take her place in Chaalbaaz 2,” the insider added.
If confirmed, the project will mark a significant milestone in Janhvi Kapoor’s career — one that blends nostalgia, legacy, and the challenge of living up to an irreplaceable icon.
