Is this the reason behind Theatres Closure in Telangana

The sudden closure of over 400 single-screen theatres in Telangana, starting May 17th, has sent shockwaves through the Tollywood industry. While the decision was initially attributed to a lack of footfall, a closer look reveals a deeper crisis, primarily driven by a scarcity of engaging content.

The management of prominent single-screen theatres, including Sudarshan 35 and 70 MM, attributed the closure to a lack of compelling films. They cited the postponement of high-profile releases like “Indian 2”, “Kalki 2898AD”, and “Love Me”, due to the ongoing elections, which have shifted public attention towards political developments.  

The lack of box office success, with only “HanuMan” and “Tillu Square” performing well in recent months, has further exacerbated the situation.  The theatre management also highlighted the inability of single-screen theatres to keep up with escalating costs, including rent and staff salaries, coupled with dwindling audience numbers.

The closure has also brought to light the challenges faced by single-screen theatres in the digital age.  The shift from physical prints to digital distribution has reduced the screening duration for films in these theatres, impacting their overall revenue. Additionally, the availability of films in multiplexes has reduced the exclusivity enjoyed by single-screen theatres.

The theatre owners are actively advocating for a more equitable revenue-sharing model, similar to that offered to multiplex theatres, and have received positive responses from producers, who have promised to address the disparity within two months.

While the 10-day closure is intended to address the immediate financial strain, the underlying issues require a more holistic approach.  The lack of fresh content, changing audience preferences, and the need for a sustainable business model for single-screen theatres are all critical factors that need to be addressed.

The industry is hopeful that the upcoming release of “Love Me If You Dare”, along with other anticipated films, will revive audience interest and bring about a positive change in the coming weeks.  The re-release of classic films is also proving to be a valuable strategy for boosting viewership,  demonstrating the enduring appeal of timeless cinematic experiences. The future of single-screen theatres in Telangana remains uncertain, but a collaborative approach, with a focus on quality content, equitable revenue-sharing, and a greater understanding of audience preferences, will be crucial for their survival and the future of the Tollywood industry.
