Is “Suriya 44” a gangster film? – Karthik Subbaraj reveals exciting updates

Suriya has teamed up with acclaimed director Karthik Subbaraj for the highly anticipated film “Suriya 44,” produced by 2D Entertainment and Stone Bench Films. Despite wrapping up shooting in just four months, the film’s release is slated for Summer 2025, allowing ample time for post-production without pressure.

Fans, who had initially expected “Suriya 44” to be a gritty gangster drama based on its look, posters, and teaser, were anticipating a fierce character from Suriya akin to his ‘Rolex’ avatar. However, in a recent interview, director Karthik Subbaraj set the record straight, revealing that “Suriya 44” is not a gangster film.

Karthik Subbaraj said, “People often assume that every film I make falls into the gangster genre, but ‘Suriya 44’ is different—it’s not a gangster film. At its core, it’s a love story with plenty of action. I was thrilled to work on a romantic narrative featuring Suriya and Pooja Hegde. Although the shooting is complete, we’re planning to release the film in Summer 2025. We want to ensure the post-production process is thorough and without any rush.”
