Chennai Super Kings (CSK) faced their first defeat of the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League after clashing with Rishabh Pant led Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Saturday. Despite posting a challenging 188 runs on the board, CSK failed to defend the total after Prithvi Shaw and Shikhar Dhawan's impressive 138-run partnership helped DC chase down the total in 18.4 overs with seven wickets to spare.
In addition to the loss, CSK's captain MS Dhoni was fined a sum of Rs. 12 lakh for maintaining a slow over rate, as per the IPL's Code of Conduct. "The minimum over rate to be achieved in IPL Matches shall be 14.11 overs per hour (ignoring the time taken by time-outs). In uninterrupted matches, this means that the 20th over should finish within 90 minutes (being 85 minutes of playing time plus 5 minutes of time-out) of the start of the innings. For delayed or interrupted matches where an innings is scheduled to be less than 20 overs, the maximum time of 90 minutes shall be reduced by 4 minutes 15 seconds for every over by which the innings is reduced," the IPL had mentioned in a statement that was published last month.
An IPL official added that if the offence was repeated a second time, Dhoni could even face a one match ban. The statement read, "Chennai Super Kings captain MS Dhoni has been fined after his team maintained a slow over-rate during their VIVO Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 match against Delhi Capitals at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on April 10. As it was his team's first offence of the season under the IPL's Code of Conduct relating to minimum over-rate offences, Mr Dhoni was fined Rs 12 lakh."
