A 66-year-old woman of Indian origin was fatally stabbed at a bus stop in northwest London on May 9, around 11:50 am local time. The suspect, a 22-year-old man, has been charged with murder and remains in custody following a court hearing on Tuesday.
The victim, Anita Mukhey, was a part-time medical secretary for the National Health Service (NHS). She was waiting at the Burnt Oak Broadway bus stop in the Edgware area when she was attacked by Jalal Debella, who stabbed her in the chest and neck. Police responded to the scene and arrested Debella in the Colindale area of north London later that day.
Debella has been charged with murder and possession of an offensive weapon. According to the Metropolitan Police, he appeared at the Old Bailey Court in London and will enter his plea at the next hearing in August.
The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) reported that the preliminary cause of death was sharp force injuries to the chest and neck.
In a statement released through the police, Mukhey’s family described her as a married mother and grandmother who was devoted to her family. “Anita Mukhey, 66 years old, was a married mother and grandmother devoted to her family, who also worked part-time in the NHS as a medical secretary. The family asks for privacy during this difficult time,” they said.
