Hotstar to fight Netflix, Amazon with Disney+

Disney+ and Hotstar are going to fight streaming giants such as Netflix and Amazon in India.  

Hotstar (both VIP and Premium) will be rebranded as Disney+ Hotstar in India. The launch will happen on March 29 and it’s going to be huge.  It may be recalled that Disney has been the owner of Hotstar ever since it acquired Fox.  The India launch coincides with the start of the 2020 IPL season.  

Hotstar, say statistics, enjoys a strong 300 million monthly active users in India. On the other hand, Disney+ has got more than 27 million paid subscribers. The combined might of the two entities is expected to give both Netflix and Amazon a tough competition.

Technology writer Subrahmanyam KVJ says, “Disney+ is now coming to India on Hotstar. I sincerely hope this means Hotstar content moving to Disney+ platform, and not the other way around!”
