The other day, Hindu religious leader Kalicharan Maharaj reportedly made "offensive" remarks against Mahatma Gandhi at an event in Chhattisgarh’s Raipur. After a video clip of Kalicharan "abusing" Gandhi went viral, outrage ensued. The Chattisgarh administration took note of the fact that Kalicharan may also have made pro-Nathuram Godse remarks in his speech. Godse is Gandhi's assassin.
As quoted by PTI, the Hindu seer reportedly asked people to elect a staunch Hindu leader as the head of the government in order to protect Hinduism in India.
The arrest happened in Khajurao in Madhya Pradesh Meanwhile, the DGP of Madhya Pradesh has stated that interstate protocols were violated in arresting Kalicharan Maharaj. Apparently, the proper procedure was not followed while picking up the religious guru. C'garh is ruled by Congress, while MP is a BJP-ruled State.
The arrest has come in for praise from several quarters. "Chattisgarh police dares to do what other state governments failed to do. Zero tolerance for hate speech and incitement to violence across religions," wrote senior journalist Rajdeep Sardesai, commenting on the development.
