Former Jammu & Kashmir chief-minister and president of People’s Democratice Party (PDP) Mehbooba Mufti has warned the ruling BJP at the Cenre not to ‘forcibly’ enter Muslims’ families by getting the ‘Triple Talaaq’ Bill passed in Parliament.
Lok Sabha passed the Bill last week after which the bill was tabled in the Rajya Sabha yesterday. As per the provisions of the Bill, Muslim men who say ‘talaaq’ thrice to conclude a divorce with their wives would be sentenced to a maximum of three years in prison. The Bill, which seeks to arrest the trend of polygamy among Muslims, is surprisingly opposed by major national parties including the Congress.
After the Lok Sabha passed the bill with a 245-11 voting of the Members present, the Bill now faces a stern test in the Rajya Sabha where the BJP is in a minority. Commenting on the Bill, the Junior Mufti (whose coalition Govt. in J&K with BJP’s help was brought down by the latter in June last year after 2 years and 2 months) said that the BJP was only attempting to interfere in Muslims’ rights and to enter their families by passing the ‘Triple Talaaq’ bill.
“This would also cause economic decline and we are steadfastly opposing the passing of the bill,” Mehbooba announced yesterday.
