Manmohan Singh: Architect of India’s Economic Reforms and Visionary Leader Passes Away at 92

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, a pivotal figure in India’s economic transformation, passed away on December 26, 2024, at the age of 92. He was admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi earlier that day due to age-related health issues and died shortly thereafter.

Born on September 26, 1932, in Gah, Punjab (now in Pakistan), Singh’s family relocated to India during the 1947 partition. He earned a doctorate in economics from Oxford University and held significant positions, including Chief Economic Advisor, Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, and head of the Planning Commission. In 1991, as Finance Minister, Singh implemented landmark economic reforms that liberalized India’s economy, steering the nation away from a severe financial crisis.

In 2004, Singh became India’s 13th Prime Minister, leading the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government. His tenure was marked by substantial economic growth, social sector reforms, and initiatives like the National Rural Health Mission and the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA). He was the first Sikh to hold the office of Prime Minister in India.

Singh’s passing elicited an outpouring of condolences from political leaders and the public. Prime Minister Narendra Modi described him as one of “India’s most distinguished leaders” and declared a period of national mourning. President Droupadi Murmu, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, and other prominent figures also paid tribute to his legacy.

The entertainment industry expressed its grief as well. Actor-comedian Kapil Sharma shared a photograph with Singh, lauding him as “the architect of India’s economic reforms and a symbol of integrity and humility.” Actress Madhuri Dixit remembered Singh’s leadership as a testament to “true wisdom and grace,” while actor Sunny Deol referred to him as a “visionary leader.” Singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh and actress Swara Bhasker also conveyed their condolences, highlighting Singh’s contributions to India’s progress.

The government has announced a seven-day period of national mourning in honor of Singh, with his last rites scheduled for December 27, 2024. His death marks the end of an era in Indian politics, leaving behind a legacy of economic reform, inclusive gro dedication to the nation’s development.
