Anurag Thakur, the Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Information Technology, today held a meeting with the officials of Facebook, Whatsapp and Instagram.
"We asked them to ensure their platforms are not used to create divisions in the society, incite violence, pose threat to India's security or let foreign powers meddle in Indian elections," he said amid concerns that Facebook is being misused for malpractices during the electioneering season.
"They accepted that there is a need for corrective measures and that they are ready for them. They have said they will be in touch with the Election Commission and work on the information provided by the concerned ministries," the Member of Parliament, who belongs to the BJP, added.
Certain sources have been quoted as saying by a newspaper that Facebook has given a commitment to the parliamentary panel that the details of the "identity, etc of those who play for advertisements during elections will be made transparent".
