Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi Champions Resolution to Establish January as Tamil Language and Heritage Month

WASHINGTON – Congressman Raja Krishnamoorthi (D-IL) has introduced a bipartisan resolution to designate January as Tamil Language and Heritage Month. Tamil, one of the world’s oldest languages, is spoken by over 80 million people globally, including 360,000 in the United States. The timing of this resolution aligns with Pongal, a major Tamil festival celebrated in mid-January, known as a time of gratitude, prosperity, and togetherness for families and communities.

“As a Tamil American, I am honored to introduce this bipartisan resolution celebrating Tamil language, heritage, and culture both in the United States and globally,” said Congressman Krishnamoorthi. “America thrives on its diverse mosaic of languages, traditions, and ideas. This resolution seeks to highlight the rich culture and remarkable achievements of Tamil Americans. I urge my colleagues in Congress to act swiftly to recognize the vital contributions of the Tamil American community.”

The resolution has garnered widespread support from Tamil organizations and advocacy groups:

  • Tamil Americans United PAC: “We deeply appreciate Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi and the members of Congress for this significant legislation, which underscores the ancient history of the Tamil people and their invaluable contributions to the modern world. We urge Tamil Americans to actively engage to ensure its successful passage.”

  • Federation of Tamil Sangams of North America (FeTNA): “We wholeheartedly support Rep. Krishnamoorthi’s resolution. As proud Tamil Americans, we believe showcasing our history, language, and culture will enrich the broader American society.”

  • U.S. Tamil Action Group (USTAG): “We thank Rep. Krishnamoorthi for leading efforts to designate January as Tamil Language and Heritage Month. This resolution celebrates the Tamil community’s ancient traditions and vibrant contributions to America’s cultural fabric.”

  • People for Equality and Relief in Lanka (PEARL): “We appreciate Congressman Krishnamoorthi’s leadership in celebrating the Tamil community’s invaluable contributions. Recognizing Tamil Heritage Month affirms the rich diversity that strengthens American society.”

Congressman Krishnamoorthi’s resolution is co-sponsored by Reps. Nicole Malliotakis (R-NY), Shri Thanedar (D-MI), Ro Khanna (D-CA), Suhas Subramanyam (D-VA), Pramila Jayapal (D-WA), Ami Bera (D-CA), Ilhan Omar (D-MN), Yvette Clarke (D-NY), Sara Jacobs (D-CA), Deborah Ross (D-NC), Danny Davis (D-IL), Dina Titus (D-NV), Don Davis (D-NC), and Summer Lee (D-PA).

This resolution not only recognizes the deep history and cultural richness of the Tamil people but also reinforces the incredible diversity that defines and strengthens American society.
