CM Revanth’s first shock: Hyderabad E-Prix Round 4 cancelled

The cancellation of the Hyderabad E-Prix stands as a poignant moment for Formula E, expressing dismay at the decision by the Telangana government. It is known that the newly elected Revanth Reddy’s Congress Government announced that he would cancel the Formula E racing in Hyderabad.

This abrupt development significantly impacts the only official FIA World Championship event earmarked for India in 2024, forming a crucial component of a multi-year accord between Formula E and the Government of Telangana.

Formula E’s Season 10 calendar faces a setback with the cancellation of the Hyderabad E-Prix Round 4, initially scheduled for February 10. The Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department of Telangana, failing to fulfill the Host City Agreement, is at the center of this decision, prompting Formula E Operations (FEO) to formally notify MAUD of a breach of contract. FEO is now evaluating its position and potential actions within the framework of the Host City Agreement and relevant laws, reserving all rights in this regard.

The Hyderabad E-Prix, intended as the sole official FIA World Championship event in India for 2024, was a pivotal aspect of a multi-year commitment with the Telangana government. The ABB FIA Formula E World Championship calendar for Season 10 includes other confirmed host cities such as Tokyo, Shanghai, Berlin, Monaco, and London. The season kicks off on January 13 with the Hankook Mexico City E-Prix.

Expressing profound disappointment, Alberto Longo, Co-Founder and Chief Championship Officer of Formula E, acknowledges the importance of hosting an official motorsport world championship race for Hyderabad and the entire nation. The support from the Federation of Motor Sports Clubs of India (FMSCI) in bringing Formula E back to Hyderabad is highlighted.

Alberto Longo further notes the frustration over the missed opportunity to build on the success of the inaugural race the previous year, which delivered nearly 84 million USD in positive economic impact to the region. The sentiments extend to major Indian partners, including Mahindra and Tata Communications, as racing in Hyderabad was deemed crucial to showcasing the benefits of embracing electric vehicles, particularly in a market where vehicle engine pollution significantly impacts public health and the environment, as emphasized by Jeff Dodds, CEO of Formula E.
