China’s Laser Gun Innovation: Cooling Breakthrough Fuels Arms Race

The Chinese military appears to have achieved a significant breakthrough in energy weapon technology, potentially revolutionizing the use of high-energy lasers. Researchers from China’s National University of Defence Technology claim to have developed an advanced cooling system that could address the overheating issues associated with powerful laser beams. Unlike previous attempts, this innovation might enable the creation of viable laser weapons.

The newly developed cooling system employs flowing gas to dissipate excess heat within the weapon. This advancement could allow laser weapons to fire precise beams continuously without losing power or disintegrating. The research team suggests that not only can high-quality beams be generated initially, but they can also be sustained over time, according to a paper published in the Chinese journal Acta Optica Sinica.

Although similar technologies have been explored by the United States, they have not seen widespread use due to potency limitations. Former British military official Steve Weaver noted that if the Chinese cooling technology proves effective, it could establish China’s superiority in various aspects, especially given previous setbacks in the field for the United States.

These advanced lasers might serve as a cost-effective alternative to traditional missile systems, potentially intercepting satellites such as Elon Musk’s Starlink. However, it’s crucial to exercise caution and await real-world performance or at least testing to validate these claims, considering previous uncertainties surrounding new Chinese weapons.
