The Tamil Nadu film industry has witnessed the rise of numerous influential personalities, and among them, Vijayakanth holds a distinctive legacy. Spanning both the realms of acting and politics, he adorned his illustrious cap with multiple feathers, standing tall as a significant figure. Let's delve into the intricacies of his political journey and notable achievements in the arena.

In a state known for its political dynamism, the transition of film stars into politics is a familiar occurrence. The illustrious examples of MGR and Jayalalithaa, who ascended to the role of Chief Ministers, paved the way for figures like Vijayakanth to follow suit. While he did not attain the position of Chief Minister, his contributions were noteworthy.

Vijayakanth embarked on his political journey by founding the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) party in 2005, contesting elections the following year. The party quickly gained prominence in 2006, distinguishing itself with a significant vote percentage. What sets DMDK apart is its commitment to self-sustenance, as Vijayakanth personally bears the party's expenses without relying on external donations.

Initially maintaining a policy of non-alliance, DMDK broke this stance by forming an alliance with AIADMK in 2011. In its debut elections, the party secured just one seat, but the impact was substantial, influencing the vote dynamics between major parties. The 2011 alliance with AIADMK proved immensely successful, surpassing expectations by winning more seats than its formidable counterpart. This triumph elevated Vijayakanth to the position of Leader of the Opposition, a role he served for five years.

However, the political landscape shifted in 2016, bringing defeat for both the party and Vijayakanth in the state assembly elections. Following this setback, the DMDK created waves by aligning with the BJP for an alliance in 2019, yet this collaboration failed to make a significant impact in the subsequent Lok Sabha elections. The outcome could have been transformative had the alliance shown greater influence.

Election Highlights:

2006 Tamil Nadu State Assembly Election - Vridhachalam - Won

2011 Tamil Nadu State Assembly Election - Rishivandiyam - Won

2016 Tamil Nadu State Assembly Election - Ulundurpet - Lost

Vijayakanth's political journey, marked by highs and lows, has left an indelible imprint on Tamil Nadu's political landscape, reflecting the complex interplay between cinema and governance in the state.
