Heavy rains in Assam in the last few days have led to severe flooding in 145 villages affecting nearly 63000 people in eight districts. The affected districts include Dhemaji, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Golaghat, Jorhat, Dibrugarh, Chirang and Barpeta. In Dhemaji it is said that 22000 people are stranded. The situation may become worse with rainfall in the next 5 days in the region.
Roads, bridges and embankments have been damaged. 3,435 hectares of agricultural land has been severely affected. Five relief camps and distribution centres have been set up in 2 districts and are providing shelter to more than 200 people.
