Mani Ratnam’s upcoming multi-lingual historical film Ponniyin Selvan, which is an adaptation of Kalki Krishnamurthy’s fictional historic novel of the same name, is arguably one of the most awaited movies of the decade. It is no doubt that the cast and crew will be facing immense pressure to give it their best as the movie is expected to be nothing short of a masterpiece.
Oscar-winning music director A.R. Rahman, who is composing the background score and soundtrack of Ponniyan Selvan, recently informed in an interview with a news agency that Ponniyin Selvan is probably his most difficult film yet. According to a report by the news agency, the legendary composer stated, “It is an epic film and required a lot of work and research. We almost worked six months on the music. We even went to Bali to write some of the songs. He (Mani Ratnam) wanted a particular sound, which is unique but at the same time relatable and we had to work really hard to get the sound. It is probably my most difficult film.”
Jointly produced by Lyca Productions and Mani Ratnam’s Madras Talkies, Ponniyin Selvan’s massive star cast includes Vikram, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Jayaram, Trisha, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Arjun Chidambaram, Lal, and Aishwarya Lekshmi, among others. The movie is being made in two parts, and the first one, that is currently under production, is slated to release in early 2021.
