Zomato, Swiggy delivery boys' earnings becomes hot topic

With Zomato announcing a 10-minute delivery plan in select cities of India (on a pilot basis in Gurgaon), many Netizens and commentators are saying that the delivery boys have already been greatly exploited. The pressure to deliver within 10 minutes is only going to make their lives and work-life worse, critics are arguing.
In this regard, a contrarian view has also been heard. Ramanuj Mukherjee suggests that the complaints about the low earnings made by the delivery boys are useless. "Zomato and Swiggy are creating a new middle class in India. Delivery boys earn Rs 20-25K per month, putting them in the top 3% of earners in India," he tweets.
Then there are those who argue that Rs 25,000 that a delivery boy typically earns in a month is an eye-wash. It's because almost Rs 10,000 goes into petrol costs and maintenance at the minimum. Even in the best case, the delivery agent doesn't earn much. In the worst case, his earning is not more than Rs 8,000 per month.
