It is turning out to be a memorable season at the box office. After 'Ready', 'Double Dhamaal', 'Delhi Belly' and 'Murder 2', it is now time for 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara' to open well too. As expected, the film saw over 70% footfalls at multiplexes (and rose to 100% at most centres as the weekend progressed), hence ensuring that the film was brought into a safety zone at the least. With over 28 crores coming in a matter of just a weekend, the film has done quite well and hence proving to be a shot in the arm of Hrithik Roshan since his 'Guzaarish' had opened to a very poor response while 'Kites', though with similar collections to boast, was marred by negative reviews and word of mouth, and hence had slid gradually.
On the other hand 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara' benefits from the fact that most reviews were quite positive while the remaining hovered around the average mark. Word of mouth too has generally ranged between good to very good though there is a segment of audience which didn't find it as exhilarating as was expected. Of course the universal thought though is that the film is nowhere close to 'Dil Chahta Hai' which means a cult status is definitely out of question.
However for everyone associated with the film, a very good opening is now a reason to rejoice. Zoya Akhtar can forget the disappointment of 'Luck By Chance', Farhan Akhtar/Ritesh Sidhwani can leave behind 'Game', Katrina Kaif can feel good about her Midas touch that constantly gives her good opening weekends while Abhay Deol can feel happy about the highest collections that his film has ever garnered.
Of course there is a heavy price tag which the film carries which means the film is not yet in a zone where it can be termed as a clean hit. Collections of second weekend would be closely studied before a verdict is passed on the film. What 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara' won't be able to ignore is the fact that there is 'Singham' to contend with which means a comfortable run is ruled out. However with three clean weeks to go before 'Aarakshan' comes calling, box office can well sustain both movies after the first weekend is totally dominated by 'Singham'.
