Yun Hota Toh Kya Hota
What if I could have done it differently? What if the situation could have been different? What if the reaction to a particular incident may have been different?
It is not uncommon for mankind to get into a retrospective mode thinking whether things could have happened differently.
Yun hota to kya hota? Agar aisa hota to? What if?
For a performer like Naseeruddin Shah, it would have required an excellent script to motivate him for coming behind the camera. Uttam Gada does exactly that as he spins a tale about numerous individuals who are a part of four different stories and only meet in the end to provide a logical conclusion to the narrative. With the concept of heroes and heroines fast fading away as far as new age cinema is concerned, and all that is supposed to matter is the script, screenplay and the characterization, Naseeruddin Shah treads the middle path as he gets some of the best actors in the business, most of whom have made an impression in both commercial and art form of cinema.
Shot in Mumbai and New York, 'Yun Hota To Kya Hota' is a tale of 20 odd individuals who are a part of the 4 stories in the film. A mix of drama, romance, action, comedy and some surprises, YHTKH has its four stories centered on the prime characters of Tilottima, Salim, Rahul and Rajubhai. Belonging to different strata of society with different aspirations, desires, expectations and motivations, they have a certain spice in their lives that promise to keep a viewer glued to the narrative. Let's have a look at who they are!
Tilottima Punj [Konkana Sen]
She is a newly wed bride who has got everything that she always wanted. A handsome young man as her hubby who promises to present her all the love in the world and shower her with happiness and fun. Hemant [Jimmy Shergill] is the kind of man that she always dreamt of and the dream turned into reality as she met him through internet and soon fell in love with him, only to get married soon.
With both Tilottima and Hemant being at the top of the world, happiness seemed to be THE essence of their lives. But that was never meant to be long lived as Hemant had to report back to USA at his workplace. A brave woman, she made it a resolve to be united with her husband and for this she could go to any lengths, even if that meant lying to the immigration officer or apply any other trick in the book!
Was she successful in her endeavor?
Salim Rajabali [Irrfan Khan]
It was not easy to be the son of a GODMOTHER [Saroj Khan], who was feared by everyone as a lady don! That was not all as Salim, a stockbroker by profession, had more trouble in store as he fell in love with a 40+ female Namrata [Suhasini Mulay], a lady who truly realized her sexuality and knew how to make use of it most effectively! She used Salim who soon found out that he is being cheated upon and in no time finds himself involved in a killing. Backed by the might of his powerful and well connected mother, he soon finds himself traveling abroad to escape law.
Was he successful in his run?
Rahul Bhinde [Ankur Khanna]
One of the many young boys who have dreams in their eyes about studying at a prestigious institute abroad, Rahul could see his dream turning true at just an arm's length. The only [and the most important] trouble? He was poor and couldn't afford the admission fees. To make matters worse, he also had to look after his father. Destiny was kind to him as the solution to his problem arrived as quickly as the problem itself and soon he was on his way to his dream university.
Was he successful in fulfilling his aspirations?
Rajubhai Patel [Paresh Rawal]
He was THE showman!<
