TN government bans online gaming to protect youngsters!

A day after the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court rebuked Sourav Ganguly and Virat Kohli for endorsing fantasy sports which include bets online, the Tamil Nadu government has made an ordinance to ban online gaming activities immediately.

Tamil Nadu has joined states like Andhra Pradesh and Telangana in stopping online gaming activities following numerous suicides reported across the states recently. The lockdown phase from March has witnessed an unexpected spike in online gaming activities as cricketers are also seen promoting fantasy cricket brands and online gaming.

In a press statement Tamil Nadu government has said: "Due to online gaming, innocent people mainly youngsters are being cheated and some people have committed suicide. In order to avoid such cases of suicide, and protect innocent people from the evils of online gaming, the government has submitted a proposal to the Governor to promulgate an ordinance by amending the Tamil Nadu Gaming Act, 1930; Chennai City Police Act 1888 and the Tamil Nadu District Police Act 1859." The ordinance will ban operators and players doing electronic transactions of money for betting and distributing prize money through online space.
