Brutal Dowry harassment: Young woman commits suicide, Police nabs husband

On Monday, a 24-year-old Vismaya was found hanging at her husband's house owing to the extreme harassment by her inlaws and husband over dowry. The tragic incident happened in Kerala's Kollam district.
Vismaya, a final year Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine and Surgery student, was married a year ago to S Kiran Kumar, an employee of the Motor Vehicles Department of the Kerala government. It was an arranged marriage. Within a few months after their wedding, Vismaya was subjected to several physical abuse from her husband dowry. Vismaya's family had given 100 sovereigns, one acre of land and a Toyota Yaris car as dowry. But, Kiran allegedly wanted cash instead of the car that Vismaya's parents gave him as dowry.
Once when Vismaya was beaten up, her parents had filed a complaint at the police and ended up in a compromise. It was just two days ago, Vismaya had shared pictures to her cousin of the brutal abuse she was subjected to recently. She alleged that she was dragged by her hair and stamped on the face over dowry. Vismaya's chat transcripts state that she was verbally abused too. As soon as her death news came out, her cousin disclosed the messages pointing to domestic violence she had undergone.
Vismaya's father lodged a complaint at the Police saying that it was a dowry murder. The Kerala Women's Commission registered a case into the incident on its own and sought a report from the police in this regard. On Monday evening, S Kiran Kumar was nabbed by the police. The tragic news had triggered a rage on social media.
