Merin Joseph is a young IPS officer who is currently the police commissioner of Kollam in Kerala. What the dutiful cop has done to nab a rape accused is quite special.
Back in 2017, a middle-aged man named Sunil Kumar Badran sexually assaulted a 13-year-old girl when he was in Kollam on a holiday trip. She was the niece of a friend of his. As per reports, the accused raped the victim for three months and left for Saudi Arabia, where he works. Since then, he hasn't returned to India, probably because he is aware that police will arrest him if he steps foot in Kerala.
The victim swallowed her trauma for months and finally opened up about what she went through. A police complaint was registered against the assaulter even as the victim was treated in a rehabilitation centre. Despite the best efforts of everyone, the girl couldn't overcome her trauma and she committed suicide in the same year.
Since then, efforts have been made to nab the accused in Saudi Arabia. Even an Interpol notice was issued, but due to poor following-up, the case couldn't be taken to its logical conclusion.
When she became the Kollam police commissioner recently, Merin Joseph decided to pursue pending rape cases on a priority basis. And she made it a point to go all the way to Riyadh in Saudi Arabia to arrest the accused herself. She coordinated with Interpol and the CBI for making the arrest.
