The Yogi Adityanath-led Uttar Pradesh government has unveiled a significant overhaul of its social media policy. Approved by the state's cabinet, the Uttar Pradesh Digital Media Policy, 2024, introduces stricter regulations and penalties for objectionable content on platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, X, and YouTube, while also offering new opportunities for influencers.

One of the most notable changes is the severe punishment for posting "anti-national" content. Under the new policy, individuals found guilty of such actions face penalties ranging from three years in prison to a potential life sentence. Previously, these offenses were prosecuted under Sections 66E and 66F of the Information Technology (IT) Act, which deal with privacy violations and cyberterrorism.

Additionally, the policy extends legal ramifications for sharing obscene or defamatory material online. Those responsible may face criminal defamation charges, underscoring the government's intent to crack down on misuse of digital platforms.

To manage digital advertising under the policy, the state has appointed the digital agency V-Form. This agency will oversee the promotion of content such as videos, tweets, posts, and reels across social media.

In a move aimed at regulating influencer earnings, the policy sets monthly payment limits across various platforms. For instance, payments are capped at Rs 5 lakh on X, Rs 4 lakh on Facebook, and Rs 3 lakh on Instagram. On YouTube, the payment ceiling is differentiated based on content type: Rs 8 lakh for videos, Rs 7 lakh for shorts, Rs 6 lakh for podcasts, and Rs 4 lakh for other content.

Commenting on the policy, Uttar Pradesh Cabinet Minister Anil Rajbhar emphasized that any misuse of social media platforms against the nation would be met with strict action. He also noted the policy's potential to address unemployment by providing a structured opportunity for individuals involved in social and digital media.

This policy marks a new chapter in the regulation of social media within Uttar Pradesh, balancing between controlling harmful content and fostering opportunities for digital influencers and content creators.
