Distinguished actor Prakash Raj, who won the National Award for the Best Actor for the year 2008, can boast of yet another celebrated achievement. He has just won the V Shantharam Award for the Best Actor for his performance in the Tamil film 'Kanjeevaram'. The distinction seems to have overwhelmed Prakash.

The passionate actor played a Communist sympathiser and poor weaver whose dream is to see his daughter in a silk bridal saree on her wedding. Mr. Raj excelled in portraying the role to perfection so much so the audience had tears in ears when they left the theatre after watching the poignant climax, where he feeds his hapless daughter with poison and proceeds to the jail.

The film has been directed by Priyadarshan, who also won the Shantaram Award in Best Director category. 'Kanjeevaram' won the prestigious Best Film award and Best Cinematography award too.

It is known that Tamannah Bhatia won the Best Actress (South) Award for her acting in 'Konchem Ishtam Konchem Kashtam'. Her Northern counterpart is Rani Mukherjee who won the award for her Dil Bole Hadippa act.
