A dolphin found dead at Fort Myers Beach, Florida was found to have a 24-inch shower hose in its esophagus and forestomach. This is the second dolphin that has been found to have consumed plastic in the last month. In response to the incident, FWC Fish and Wildlife Research Institute urged the public to “secure and properly dispose of trash, take part in coastal cleanups and share information on how to reduce marine debris with others.”

They also reported that animals tend to strand or beach themselves when they are injured and sick, and it is important to call for professional help, not push them back into the water. Investigations into the actual cause of death are ongoing, considering several factors that may have played a role.
