No one can forget the unexpected fall out between Isaignani Ilaiyaraja and veteran playback singer S.P.Balasumbramaniam over the former's claim of royalty from the latter for singing the songs composed by him in concerts. The controversy also lead to arguments that even playback singers who play a vital role in giving life to a song with their voice should get a share of royalty.
Now for the first time in India, a playback singers have received royalty. The Indian Singers Rights Association has distributed a cheque of Rs.51 lakhs to film playback singers such as P.Susheela, K.J.Yesudas, S.P.Balasubramaniam, Chithra. Srinivas and many others.
The spokesperson of ISRA said the royalty to singers have been paid by IPL teams, amusement parks and few other establishments who have used the songs sung by them for commercial purposes. He also said that the royalty amount received by singers will increase 10 fold if radio stations and television channels also start paying royalty. The organisation is contemplating legal recourse to achieve this.
