'Yatra' Teaser Review: Plain, melodramatic

In 'Yatra', writer-director Mahi V Raghav is telling the story of YS Rajasekhar Reddy's rise in 2003-2004 in public consciousness at a time when farm suicides and agri distress were stark in then united Andhra Pradesh. YSR, who would trounce TDP in the 2004 Assembly elections, took a Pada Yatra during which the Congress leader interacted with thousands of farmers.
The Teaser for 'Yatra' seeks to give us a glimpse of this game-changing journey (yatra). While you might have expected a realistic portrayal, we have a permanently-outraged character from mass-masala flicks like 'Chatrapathi' telling YSR (Mammootty) that farmers have been treated like sub-humans. 'Nenu vinnanu, nenu unnanu', Mammootty says to a man on the death bed, post which a crowd is seen rallying behind the 'ultimate' leader. This is much like those Jana Sena's promo videos.
Rao Ramesh, Jagapathi Babu, Suhasini, Posani Krishna Murali and Anasuya will be seen in key roles. Suchin Kadekar, Vinodh Kumar, Jeeva, and comedian Prudvi will also be seen.
With music by K, it has cinematography by Sathyan Sooryan, editing is by Sreekar Prasad, and Production Design is by Ramakrishna and Monica Sabbani (of 'Rangasthalam' and 'Antariksham' fame). Choreography is by Brinda.
The film releases on February 8.
