Thanks to Yashasvi Jaiswal's awe-inspiring innings, the Indian team defeated Pakistan to make it to the finals of the ICC Under 19 World Cup 2020 in South Africa on Tuesday. He is also currently the top-scorer of the tournament, but he has had to go through a lifetime of struggle to reach this point. His background and history will serve as a major inspiration for anyone who aspires to make it big in life.
He narrated the same in his interview with a news agency. Jaiswal reportedly stated, "I used to sleep in a dairy in Kalbadevi but they asked me to move out as I couldn’t help them much with the daily work. My parents requested my uncle to help me. I stayed at his place for a few days but it wasn’t big enough so he too had to ask me to find a different place. I was staying in a tent alright but I had no money to buy food. So I started selling paani puri during Ram Leela. I also did scoring, became a ball boy even when I was not asked to. Basically, I did everything through which I could earn money."
He further added, "I always used to see boys my age bringing food or their parents had big lunches with them. As for me, it was - khana khud banao, khud khao. (make your own food, eat alone). No breakfast. Catch hold of anyone around and request them to buy breakfast. Every night used to be a candlelight dinner. After all, there was no electricity. I would miss my family and would cry. It was not just being homesick but going to the toilet was a hindrance to sleep. There was no toilet at the maidan, and the one near Fashion Street that I used was closed at night."
When asked about the pressures that cricket offers, Jaiswal stated, "You are talking about mental pressure in cricket? I have faced it daily in my life for years. Those have made me strong. Scoring runs is not important. I know I will score and take wickets. For me, whether I get the next meal or not, that’s important."
