Women's Day Special: Top 10 Women Achievers of the New Decade

The first half of the new decade has been completed and the film industry that has been blamed for stereotyping women as a glam-dolls has changed a lot in its perspective towards. The fairer sex. In the last five years many women have made phenomenal strides in Tamil film industry.

There have been heroines who are still blazing strong after completing a decade, woman directors who have given successful films, women centric films that have appealed the audience of all sections and there have been films made by women with a story that does not confine to issues faced by women.

On this occasion of International Women's Day, Indiaglitz brings you some of the noteworthy women achievers of the new decade.

Nayanthara

Nayanthara is in her second decade as a heroine and the interesting part is that she is more successful and her fan base has widened in the second than her first. She made a comeback after a brief hiatus with the Ajith starrer 'Arrambam' which was a super hit. From then on there has been no looking back. Last year she acted in at least three super hit films, 'Maya' in which she played the solo lead role, disproved the myth that films centered on a female character will be liked only by the niche audience.

Presently she is acting in another horror flick with a woman character as its epicenter. Apart from this she is acting with the top hero Vikram for the first time in 'Iru Mugan' and the coming years are going to be merrier for this phenomenally talented actress.

Trisha

After winning the Miss Madras title in the late 1990s Trisha started her Kollywood journey in the year 2002. It is 2016 and she is acting in her first film as a pair of Dhanush who is one of the leading stars in Tamil film industry. It has been a few years since Trisha completed a decade as a heroine and she is still pairing up with many leading heroes when most of her peers have faded away.

Trisha is also acting in her first woman centric film 'Nayaki' and we hope her position as the heroine will only get stronger in the years ahead.

Anushka

During her initial years Anushka was considered as yet another glam girl in Telugu and Tamil films. But today she is easily the most talented female performer in South India. She played a vital role in India's biggest ever blockbuster 'Baahubali' that released last year and also acting in its sequel which will release next year. In 'Rudhramadevi' a grand biopic that released last year, she played the titular role and also dared to act as a male in most part of the film, a feat that very few women have achieved in Indian cinema.

While we have seen a lot of heroines shedding kilos to look fit and younger, she is also the first actress to add as much as 15 kilograms for the fat girl character she played in 'Size Zero'/'Inji Idupazhagi'

Anushka is acting as the pair of Suriya in 'S3' the third part of 'Singam' series and is the top contender for the female lead in National award winning director Bala's next multi-starrer with Arya, Vishal, Rana, Atharvaa and Arvind Swamy.

Abhinaya

Abhinaya has carved a niche for herself as a supporting actress in South Indian Films. This Malayalee girl made her debut with 'Nadodigal' that released in 2009. Now she is busy with some promising projects in Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam. She has also completed shooting for a Hollywood film 'Ability in Disability' directed by former Oscar nominee Rupam Sarmah.

That she was born with hearing and speech impairment will be news to those who do not know her background. She carries off normal characters hands down overcoming her disabilities.

Thamarai

There was a sudden emergence of women poets in Tamil during the 1990s. Thamarai was the first woman poet to make a strong imprint in Tamil cinema as a lyricist. With unique style of writing Thamarai remains a most sought after lyricist amid a huge number of male lyricists.

The striking aspect of Thamarai is that she has never resorted to crass lines and double meaning terms and avoids words from other language. Her songs come up as a splendid treat to chaste Tamil lovers. She is also not the one who would befit songs written from female perspective. 'Karka Karka' from 'Vettaiyadu Vilaiyadu' and 'Kadikaram Parthal Thavaru' easily deserve a place in the list of most cherished hero intro songs of Tamil cinema written by her.

She is presently busy working with top directors and music directors. She has penned all the songs in director Gautham Menon's next film 'Achcham Yenbathu Madamiayada'.

Lakshmy Ramakrishnan

Lakshmy Ramakrishnan started getting noticed as a supporting actor in Tamil films during the fag end of the previous decade. In director Mysskin's super hit thriller 'Yudham Sei' (2011), she played a very strong willed woman who goes all out to avenge the killers of her daughter and also tonsured her head, a thing actresses especially of her age would hesitate to do.

Not getting contended as a supporting actor, she ventured into filmmaking and delivered her first directorial 'Aarohanam' which had a woman with bipolar disorder as its central character. The film that released in 2012 was critically acclaimed as well as profitable. Her second film 'Nerungi Va Muthamudiadhey' was not as well received as her first but still Lakshmy has not given up. She has completed directing the film 'Ammani' which is a tale of two women one played by her and the other played by Subbulakshmi, an octogenarian woman.
