Two women have hogged headlines days after divorcing their respective husbands. Reason? They tied the knot! Yes, they had been in love for six years ever since they first fell in love with each other during college days.
One of them is aged 24, while her lover is 26. They hail from Hamirpur in Uttar Pradesh's Bundelkhand region. While the two women participated in a ceremony at a temple to announce their marriage, last heard, the registrar didn't recognize their wedding.
It may be noted that homosexuality is not criminal in India but same-sex marriages are yet to get legal recognition. So, the registrar's refusal to register their marriage is not surprising.
The two women are looking forward to live together now that it's not criminal to be in a civil partnership with someone of the same sex. The duo, separated after their parents forcibly married them to men, had to discontinue their studies after their elders got to know of the lesbian relationship. They waged a legal battle, making it open that they want to have a reunion. Their lawyer has said that they can stay together within the ambit of the law.
