On January 5, a newborn baby boy was found abandoned under a garbage heap near a house in Kerala's Kollam district. The residents of the house came to know about the presence of the child under a pile of leaves after they heard its cries. When the baby was found, even its umbilical cord was intact. After the locals and the Police arrived, the baby was rushed to the hospital, but he breathed his last due to infection. The news sent shockwaves across the state of Kerala and the Police have been looking for the mother who did this heinous crime.
On Tuesday, the Police arrested the woman who abandoned the baby. It was Reshma (22) who abandoned the baby soon after the delivery. Confessing to the Police, Reshma said that she abandoned the baby to elope with her boyfriend, whom she met on social media. Reportedly, Reshma was in a relationship with a person named Anandu, who had promised to marry her if she left her three-year-old daughter and husband. When she was planning to elope, she realized that she was pregnant. Observing that the pregnancy and the baby will turn into an obstacle to elope with the boyfriend, she decided to hide it from all including her husband. On January 4th night at 8:30 pm, Reshma gave birth to the baby in a toilet outside her house. She then abandoned the child in a pile of dry leaves in a land near the house.
After conducting several inspections using a dog squad and forensic experts, the Police suspected Reshma's family as they are the owners of the land where the baby was found. It was the DNA results that turned crucial in the findings. Police are also investigating whether others in the family were involved in the case as Reshma's confessions are not completely convincing. Meanwhile, the cyber cell is looking into the details of Reshma's lover Anandu.
