Will You Marry Me? Review

Watching 'Will You Marry Me?' is one haphazard experience. At places it seems like another take on 'Zindagi Naa Milegi Dobara' (three friends with one of them about to get married to a demanding girl), at others it turns into a 'Deewana Mastana' (two boys trying to outsmart each other and gain attention of a girl). Unfortunately this mishmash affair neither turns out to be comic nor romantic/dramatic, hence turning out to be a forgettable affair.

One can't really say that 'Will You Marry Me?' starts with a bang either. The very pretext of three friends (Shreyas Talpade, Rajeev Khandelwal, Muzzamil Ibrahim) deciding to bet upon their likelihood of ever getting married seems a rather too flimsy. Even the jokes between them don't really make you burst out laughing. An attempt is made to show them on a back slapping term but clearly, the zing is missing.

Entry of Mugdha Godse in their life (mainly Shreyas and Rajeev) does promise some fun moments and there are actually a few, especially with both boys deciding to interchange their personality for her. However this angle, despite carrying good potential, is unfortunately not explored much, hence leaving a sense of hollowness. By the time things start clearing up on the love front, arrival of Paresh Rawal as the 'Gukta King' only complicates the proceedings and takes 'Will You Marry Me?' into a different zone altogether, something that is not quite welcome.

Unfortunately in case of 'Will You Marry Me?' the interest level doesn't quite stay consistent right through those two hours due to constant inclusion of different sub-plots. Picture this, there is one such weird sequence where Muzzamil is required to wear lingerie and click his picture with it! This is nothing when compared to one extended sequence that has been shot in a gay bar featuring Bobby Darling. Shoddily shot, the sequence features a full-on song where lead protagonists get into Superman costume and start jiving to the beats for a full fledged song.

Post interval portions don't work much either, what with constant flip-flop of Mugdha's love for Rajeev and Shreyas leaving audience confused and also left wondering if she would consent to either of the two. Frankly, the writing just goes for a toss by this time around. Thankfully the extended sequence featuring cricket betting comes across as reasonably interesting but by that time it is way too late. Also, the pre-climax and climax again result in the film going downhill.

The film doesn't score too high on acting department either though Shreyas does bring in comic sparks at times in the first half. Rajeev tries hard to show a different side of his persona but the final results are a mixed bag. Mugdha exudes oomph at a few places and acts decent as well. However her characterisation is patchy. Muzzamil and Triptaa (who plays his girlfriend) are decent. Celina Jaitly is hardly there and one wonders what made her sign this thankless part.

These are the reasons why one doesn't quite end up acknowledging the film for some of the funny moments that come on screen, courtesy Shreyas. With Mugdha bringing on the glamour quotient, this film did lend some expectations but loses fizz in the middle of it all.
