The couple, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, who first met on the set of Smith's iconic TV show "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air," tied the knot in 1997. Throughout their relationship, they became parents to Jaden, 25, Willow, 22, and Trey, 30, whom Will Smith had during his previous marriage to Sheree Zampino. Although they remain legally married, Jada Pinkett Smith stunned everyone during a preview of an October 2023 primetime interview, where she confessed to living "completely separate lives" from Will Smith since 2016.

When asked what caused their marriage to unravel, Jada Pinkett Smith attributed it to "a lot of things." She explained, "By the time we got to 2016, we were just exhausted from trying. I think we were both kind of still stuck in our fantasy of what we thought the other person should be."

In the episode, Jay Shetty offered to read the letter out loud for her. The letter expressed Will Smith's appreciation and love for her, and Jada Pinkett Smith warmly accepted it. "That’s beautiful," she said. "That’s why I can’t divorce that joker."
