Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal may have sent out the right message as far as the growing sentiment around ending the lockdown is concerned. Slowly and surely, sections of politicians are realizing that the lockdown has become a bane.
From Monday (May 4), many relaxations have come into effect. Even so, with no trains, buses and metros running, and containment zones in important cities like Mumbai remaining shut down, the economy is not fully opened up as yet. In this regard, it is indispensable to bear in mind that revenues have fallen drastically and the lockdown needs to be lifted, say some commentators. Kejriwal's Sunday statement is relevant in this regard.
"The revenue of Delhi has fallen from Rs 3,500 crores in April month of previous years to Rs 300 crores this year. How will the government function (if this goes on)?" the Delhi CM has been quoted as saying.
"This is what the Chief Ministers of other important States such as Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana have to do. Exert pressure on the Centre to lift the lockdown," a columnist said on Twitter.
The question is, will K Chandrasekhar Rao, Jaganmohan Reddy, BS Yeddyurappa and others repeat Kejriwal's point?
