It is not uncommon for someone to become famous and then,if at all they do have that ‘one in a million' luck, occupy the front cover of a prestigious magazine. But Gilu Joseph has broken the norm, shooting to fame after her cover photo in a Malayalam fortnightly.
From Kumily, Idukki district of Kerala, Gilu is not averse to far away lands and high skies. How, you ask? Here’s an interesting detail: apart from shocking us with her bold and contoversial cover, Gilu also has been a model and works as an air hostess for Fly Dubai airlines. She had actually moved to Dubai when she was 18 years old after she got the opportunity with Fly Dubai.
Another interesting facet of her personality is her fondness towards pen and paper finding her creative outlet in the form of poetry. If you’re thinking maybe its just a harmless hobby for her, then know that she had also won the Palm Pusthakapura Akshara Thoolika award for her lines. She has also lent her lyrical creativity to several Malayalam projects such as the ‘2 Penkuttikal’, ‘Sathya’, ‘C/O Saira Banu’, ‘Lailaa O Lailaa’.
In the acting department as well Joseph has proved her mettle in Nivin Pauly’s ‘Jacobinte Swargarajyam’, ‘Thrissivaperoor Kliptham’, ‘Aby’, ‘Rabbit hole’, ‘Adam Joan’ and ‘Ottamuri Velicham’ as well.
The 27 year old who has two sisters recently set the media ablaze with her cover in ‘Grihalakshmi’. Her ‘breastfeeding a child’ image received mixed reponses with the majority supporting her bold decision. Pertaining to this, Gilu also had stated that she is extremely proud of her body and it was her right to take up the project as well.
It could be said that with her cover, she had made a bold statement for the women community all over the country. It is believed that her image has created impact upon the masses as to desexualize women breastfeeding in public spaces and signals a brighter, socially relevant tomorrow.
Gilu is a bundle of talents and more than deserving, fit to be on the cover is what is true. So, ‘Gilu Joseph’ is just not a magazine cover, but a bold statement.
