AR Rahman has bid an emotional adieu to SP Balasubrahmanyam by posting a 7-minute-long video on the Internet. The legendary music director's several trysts with the legendary singer have been captured beautifully in the video, complete with Rahman speaking nostalgically about the phenomenon that Balu was.
ARR shared a very interesting anecdote from the days of Mani Ratnam's 'Roja'. When Rahman recorded 'Naa Cheli Rojaave' with SPB, the singer was skeptical. "How can this studio produce cinematic sound?" SPB asked the music director. After the song was made and became a big hit, SPB appreciated Rahman and said, "You have proved that music could be produced anywhere.”
ARR reveals that one of the first performances he gave in a big way was celebrating SPB's birthday in 1982 at the Chennai Music Academy. He also says that SPB was a super-quick learner who would learn a song in 15 minutes flat. It might look humanly impossible but he sang several songs in just 10 minutes. "He was highly professional and humble," Rahman says.
From 'Roja', 'Muthu', 'Premikudu' and several others, we have seen SPB and ARR collaborate repeatedly over the years. The song 'Andala Rakshasi' from 'Oke Okkadu' was enlivened by Balu's unmatched voice. Millions of the duo's fans will miss the combination forever!
