How many times have you said, "That movie scared me to death!" after exiting a theater? While the term may be one of the highest compliments you can pay a movie, what if it literally kills viewers in real life?
Yes, some films really do seem to suffer inexplicable chilling curses. Here we are talking about a horror thriller titled 'Antrum' that claimed the lives of 86 people. The movie which was shot in the 1970s is said to be apparently cursed and causes anyone who watches it to die shortly after their viewing. Created by filmmakers David Amico and Michael Laicini, the movie tells the story of a young brother and sister who are devastated by the loss of their dog.
The first tragedy the film caused was in Budapest, Hungary at a movie theater in 1988. While the film was rolling, the building spontaneously caught fire and it started spreading within the audience seating area. The strange fact is that the film reel and projector room should have burned as well but it did not. The tragic incident killed 56 people.
After the film gained notoriety, a theater in San Francisco decided to screen the film in 1993. A set of audiences who were aware of the curse entered the theatre and the screening also began. In an unlikely turn of events, the audience turned anxious and ran to the exits only to realize that they were all locked. With no means to escape, people began stampeding to all exit doors, which lead to the death of several people. It is also said that an unexplained explosion also popped up inside the theatre.
Though the film was submitted to various festivals, it was never screened. After receiving Antrum, festival programmers began to die mysteriously. All these events have created a belief that watching 'Antrum' will kill you.
For almost twenty years, Antrum disappeared until it popped up again recently. After a limited release in February 2020 in Japan, the movie is now available in Amazon Prime (Only in the US) enticing viewers to tempt their fate.
