Filmmaker Vivek Agnihotri of 'The Kashmir Files' fame has said that India is the only (non-Islamic) country where a special genre called Muslim Social came into existence. It was there from 1950s till about 1980s in Bollywood. In the new millennium, Bollywood films like 'Fizaa', 'Haider', and 'Fanaa' may be put under the category of Muslim Social, he added.

As per Agnihotri, what is typical about the Muslim Social genre is that they tried to portray Kashmir as a land that never belonged to Hindus. "Kashmir used to be a Hindu-majority land before Hindus were driven out over centuries by terrorists. When my film (read 'Kashmir Files) brought out the truth about (the Hindu past), they started targeting me," the director said, targeting pseudo-secularists in the intellectual, artistic and academic circles.

He said that Muslim Social existed in Bollywood but never something like a Hindu Social or a Christian Social genre. "Are they not part of our society?" he asked, calling out the biased filmmaking culture championed by many writers/directors.
